The Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test

New South Wales runs two separate Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Tests, and they are not interchangeable. The licence class you are applying for decides which test you sit, and passing the correct one is what unlocks your HVCBA training hours.

The combination test covers material the rigid test does not, because a combination vehicle behaves in ways a rigid vehicle cannot: jackknifing, trailer swing and coupling failure. If you are applying for Heavy Combination or Multi Combination, the rigid test does not substitute, even if you already hold a Heavy Rigid licence.

Jackknifing, trailer swing and coupling failure are covered only by the combination test, which is why holding a Heavy Rigid licence does not exempt you from sitting it.

The Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test comes before any HVCBA training hours

Under the Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment scheme in New South Wales, the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test sits at stage two of five. Stage one happens at a Service NSW centre and covers the licence application form, proof of identity, an eyesight test and the applicable fees. The knowledge test follows immediately after.

Logged training hours begin only once you have passed the knowledge test. Training time is the most expensive component of a heavy vehicle licence, so sitting the knowledge test as soon as you are eligible is the single cheapest scheduling decision available to you.

Confirm your licence tenure before booking the knowledge test

The Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test does not verify that you are eligible for the licence class you are pursuing. Transport for NSW checks eligibility against your licence history separately.

Confirm your tenure first. Light Rigid and Medium Rigid require one year on a full class C car licence. Heavy Rigid requires two years. Heavy Combination requires one year on an MR or HR licence, and Multi Combination requires one year on an HR or HC licence. The licence class ladder sets out all five in full.

Where to sit the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test in South West Sydney

The Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test is administered at Service NSW centres, and drivers across South West Sydney have several within reach. Service NSW Liverpool serves Liverpool, Moorebank, Casula, Prestons, Chipping Norton and Holsworthy. Service NSW Campbelltown serves Campbelltown, Minto, Ingleburn, Leumeah, Macquarie Fields and Glenfield.

Your HVCBA training and your Final Competency Assessment happen with a Registered Training Organisation rather than at a Service NSW centre, so the location of your knowledge test does not determine where you train.
